Coin hoard from the Apadana foundation depositFour gold Croeseid coins from Lydia, about 520–500 BC, and three silver coins (as shown) produced in Cyprus, were found beneath the south east foundation deposit of the Apadana at Persepolis.
Given the marginal part that coinage played in much of the empire, the use of coinage in this symbolic way must be questioned. Rather than being geographically significant artefacts, it may rather be that the coins were deposited as items of bullion. Persepolis, Apadana
